Development milestones for 9 to 12 month-old babies

Between 9 and 12 months of age, children are little waddling & babbling characters responding to simple requests. Isn’t it wondrous?

You can use our free Tummy Time app at this age for hand-eye coordination and teaching your baby to use her index finger to make food for the caterpillar, while still being easy on her eyes.

A while back they couldn’t do half of the things they are capable now. Here is a full list:

Social/Emotional Milestones

  • Plays games with you, like pat-a-cake
  • Hands you a book when he wants to hear a story
  • Cries when his parents leave
  • Is shy around strangers
  • He’ll put out an arm or leg to help with getting dressed
  • Has favourite toys
  • Repeats sounds to get your attention

Cognitive Milestones (learning, thinking, problem-solving)

  • Puts something in a container, like a block in a cup
  • Looks for things he sees you hide, like a toy under a blanket
  • He is copying movements and gestures
  • Bangs objects together
  • Drinks from a cup and uses other objects correctly
  • Finds things that are hidden
  • He looks at the right object when it is named
  • Can follow simple directions and lets go of objects without help

Language/Communication Milestones

  • Waves “bye-bye”
  • Calls a parent “mama” or “dada” or another special name
  • Understands “no” (pauses briefly or stops when you say it)
  • Her babbles sound more like speech
  • Responds to simple requests you give
  • She will try to repeat words you say

Movement/Physical Development Milestones

  • Pulls up to stand
  • Walks, holding on to furniture
  • Drinks from a cup without a lid, as you hold it
  • Picks things up between thumb and pointer finger, like small bits of food

Please keep in mind that this is not medical advice. These developmental milestones are what 75% of children are capable of at this age. If your child does not achieve these milestones at this time, please do not be alarmed. Remember that you know your child best and if you do feel there is something wrong please contact your medical professional.
